Underkeep Bosses: Every Named Fight and Prep
Underkeep bosses listed with confirmed names, the fights that gate progression, the immunities to test, and the preparation checklist that prevents wipes.
Underkeep bosses are damage and preparation checks, not reflex tests. Most wipes come from entering with low food, no cures, or a party that cannot answer armor. This page lists the named fights confirmed by community reports and the checklist that applies to all of them.

What bosses are confirmed?
| Boss | Where | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bandit Chieftain | Early dungeon | First major boss, tied to an achievement |
| Arachneira | Tunnels | Reported spider boss before the southern passage |
| Orc Chieftain | Orc Camp | Drops the key to his private chest |
| Rat Queen, Mother of the Warren | Early warrens | Named in community bestiary reports |
| Scourge of the Tunnels | Tunnels | Named in community reports |
| Dreadcoil of the Deep | Deep route | Named in community reports |
| Frog King, Last Crown of the Mire | Swamp | Named in community reports |
| Obula | Unknown | Named in community reports |
| Skeleton King | Unknown | Named in community reports |
| Fangspire | Unknown | Named in community reports |
| Mud Ooze | Unknown | Named in community reports |
| The Thing | Unknown | Named in community reports |
The names come from the community bestiary and Steam data. Public sources do not document every arena or move set, so this page avoids inventing attack patterns.
How should you prepare for a boss?
The same six-item checklist works for every fight.
- Rest until food is above ten and health is full.
- Carry at least two cures and four healing potions.
- Equip armor on both frontliners.
- Bring one armor-ignoring or Sharpness source.
- Save before the door.
- Decide the first three actions before you enter.
The last one matters more than gear. A party that opens with a mark, a buff, and focused damage kills a boss two rounds faster than a party that spreads damage.
What is the Bandit Chieftain fight?
The Bandit Chieftain is the first major boss and the subject of the Who's the Boss Now? achievement. It is a preparation check: the fight punishes a party with no cures and rewards focus fire.
Bring a full pantry, heal through the adds, and kill the chieftain before the room wears you down. If you are undergeared, clear the side rooms for armor first.
What is the Orc Chieftain fight?
The Orc Chieftain guards Orc Camp and drops the key to his private chest. That chest contains the Silver Key, which opens the northwest door in Hollowgrave Tunnels.
The fight is a straight damage race with armored adds. Focus the chieftain, use armor-ignoring skills, and open the chest before you leave the camp. The Silver Key page→ has the full route.
How do you handle boss immunities?
Test with a cheap control skill on turn one. Many bosses ignore stun, and some ignore bleed or poison. The combat log tells you when a status fails.
| If the boss ignores | Stop using | Use instead |
|---|---|---|
| Stun | Shield Bash, Thunderwake | Raw damage, armor pierce |
| Bleed | Bleeding Dash, Barbed Arrows | Direct damage, marks |
| Poison | Nightshade procs | Elemental damage |
| Fire | Fire Spark, Fireball | Ice or lightning |
| All control | Control skills | Buffs, barriers, healing |
Do not spend three rounds testing every immunity. One cheap test is enough; after that, commit to the damage type that works.
Why do bosses feel unfair?
Usually because the party is underprepared, not because the boss cheats. Three common causes: no cures for the status the boss applies, a back row that gets reached, and a healer with no mana.
If a boss reaches the back row, put a barrier on the target and kill the add that reaches. If the healer is out of mana, the fight was lost two rooms earlier; rest and restock.
The game does not autosave at the door. A manual save costs five seconds and saves the run.
What about the deeper bosses?
The deeper fights are named but not fully documented. Treat them as harder versions of the same checklist: more cures, more armor, and a plan for adds.
If a fight introduces a new mechanic, test it with one hero and read the log. Do not commit the whole party to an unverified plan.
