Underkeep Gravewood Crypt: Stuck Gargoyle Fix
What to do when the four gargoyles get stuck in Underkeep Gravewood Crypt, why there is no reset lever yet, and how to recover without losing the run.
The Gravewood Crypt gargoyle puzzle can soft-lock: the four statues get stuck in the centre and the room offers no reset. The developer has acknowledged the issue and says a reset lever is planned for a future update. Until then, the practical fix is an earlier save.

Where is the Gravewood Crypt?
The crypt is an optional area reached through the northwest branch of Hollowgrave Tunnels, beyond the Silver Key door. It is not required to finish the game.
That matters for recovery. A stuck puzzle in an optional area costs loot and time, not the ending. You can leave and finish the run.
What is the gargoyle puzzle?
Four gargoyles stand around a central mechanism. Pushing them into certain positions is supposed to open the way forward. In the build discussed by the developer, the statues can end up in the centre with no way to push them back out.
The community calls it a soft-lock because the room does not reset and there is no lever. The party is not dead; the puzzle is simply unsolvable in that state.
| State | Result |
|---|---|
| Gargoyles in correct positions | Puzzle solved |
| Gargoyles stuck in centre | No reset, no lever |
| Leave and re-enter | Statues stay stuck |
| Reload earlier save | Puzzle resets |
Is there a reset lever?
Not in the build discussed by the developer. A future update was planned to add one. As of November 6, 2026, no patch has shipped, so do not expect a lever in the current version.
This is different from the demo statue corridor, where entering the corridor or pushing any statue resets the puzzle. That reset is demo-specific and does not apply to the Gravewood Crypt.
The failure state is the statues ending up in the centre. If you are experimenting, keep one statue outside the middle and save before you push.
How do you recover?
Reload a save from before you entered the crypt. That is the only reliable recovery reported so far. If you do not have one, leave the crypt and continue the main route.
Do not delete the save or start a new run for this. The area is optional, and a future patch may add the lever. Keep the save in case the fix arrives.
| Situation | Best move |
|---|---|
| Save before the crypt | Reload and retry carefully |
| No save before the crypt | Leave and continue the game |
| Puzzle already solved | Loot and move on |
| Statues stuck, want completion | Keep the save, wait for a patch |
Can you solve it without a reset?
No verified solution exists for the stuck state. Any guide that gives a precise push sequence without acknowledging the soft-lock is guessing. The safe approach is to save before experimenting and to avoid pushing all four statues into the centre.
If you want to attempt it, work one statue at a time. Note each position on the map before you push. The moment the room looks wrong, reload rather than pushing further.
What do you get from the crypt?
The crypt is optional content with puzzle rewards, not a main-story key. Public sources do not list a complete reward table, so this page does not invent one. Treat the loot as a bonus and the completion as a personal goal.
If you are chasing achievements, the crypt is not one of the confirmed 20. The achievements page→ lists the ones that are confirmed.
Should you do the crypt on a first run?
Only if you have a save you are willing to lose. On a blind run, the risk of a soft-lock outweighs the reward. Clear the main route first, then come back with a dedicated save.
The Silver Key page→ explains how to reach the door. The map page→ shows the branch in context.
FAQ
Is the Gravewood Crypt required?
No. It is optional and does not gate the ending.
Will the developer fix the stuck gargoyles?
The developer has said a reset lever was planned for a future update. No date or patch is confirmed.
Can you reset the room by leaving?
No. Leaving and re-entering does not reset the statues in the reported build.
