Underkeep Tier List: All 7 Classes Ranked

An Underkeep tier list for launch: Paladin and Voidcaller lead, Wizard and Warrior follow, and the damage classes need a party built around them.

Last Updated: 2026-11-06

Our launch Underkeep tier list puts Paladin and Voidcaller in S, Warrior and Wizard in A, Ranger in B, and Thief and Blood Mage in C for a blind first run. The ranking measures how much a class contributes without a party built around it, not raw damage in a perfect setup.

How is this tier list judged?

Three questions decide each placement. Does the class solve a problem the party cannot solve otherwise? Does it work from the row it naturally occupies? And does it stay useful when the player makes a mistake?

A blind run has no perfect information. You do not know the next boss's immunities, you do not know whether the next chest holds a weapon your build needs, and you will sometimes rest at the wrong time. Classes that recover from those mistakes rank above classes that only perform in ideal conditions.

Tier Classes What it means
S Paladin, Voidcaller Fixes survival problems by itself
A Warrior, Wizard Strong, but wants one specific partner
B Ranger Excellent damage, fragile if focused
C Thief, Blood Mage High ceiling, high setup cost

Why are Paladin and Voidcaller in S?

Paladin is the only class that tanks, heals, and scales damage against undead in one kit. Lay on Hands is a cheap heal, Divine Guard turns every Zeal spend into armor, and Stun Undead is a hard stop against a whole enemy type. A Paladin does not need a dedicated healer behind it to survive the front row.

Voidcaller is the best pure support in the game. Void Mend heals and, at higher levels, removes bleed, burn, poison, and stun. Its auras give the party passive value every round, and Void Lance ignores defenses, so it never becomes useless against armored enemies. The class is less exciting than a Wizard, but it is the reason a bad fight stays recoverable.

S does not mean highest damage

Paladin and Voidcaller win because they prevent wipes. A dead party deals zero damage, no matter how high the Wizard's spell power is.

Is Warrior still worth an A slot?

Yes. Warrior has the widest weapon-based kit and the best taunt in the game. Provoking Shout redirects up to 100% of attacks at max level, which is the cleanest way to protect a low-armor backliner who got pulled into melee. Battle Roar adds party damage and crit, and Champion's Grip is a free action.

The catch is weapon locks. Flurry Thrust wants a sword, Skull Rattle wants a mace, Slice and Dice wants an axe, Cleave wants two-handed, and Shield Bash wants a shield. A Warrior spread across three weapon types is a Warrior with no reliable skill. Pick one line and build around it.

Why is Wizard only A?

Wizard has the highest burst ceiling in the game and the best elemental coverage. Fire Spark applies burn, Ice Shard freezes, Static Shock hits two enemies, and late-game Fireball and Ice Tower hit groups. Dragon Arcana boosts every element at once.

The problem is fragility and mana. A Wizard in the back row still dies to ranged enemies and AoE, and its best spells are expensive. Without a Voidcaller aura or a steady potion supply, the Wizard spends half the dungeon out of mana. Put it in A, not S, because it amplifies a good party rather than fixing a bad one.

Are Thief and Blood Mage really C?

For a blind first run, yes. Both classes have strong ceilings and awkward floors. Thief wants a dagger or sword, applies bleed and poison, and gets crit scaling from DEX, but its best damage comes from setup: bleed first, then Backstab the Weak or Shadow Lunge. Against undead, bleed and poison do nothing, which removes a large part of the kit.

Blood Mage spends HP as its resource and gets 30% weaker against undead with Blood Lance and Bloodfall. Leechcraft at level 5 turns that around, but level 5 is a long way into a first run. In a party that already has a Paladin and a Voidcaller, the Blood Mage is a fun third damage dealer. In a blind party, it is a liability until the support comes online.

Which class should you pick first?

Pick Paladin if you want one class that can carry a bad party. Pick Voidcaller if you hate losing runs to status effects. Pick Warrior if you want the simplest frontliner, and Wizard if you want the biggest numbers.

The best party page→ turns these picks into three complete compositions. If you already know your class and want the skill order, the best build page→ goes point by point.

FAQ

What is the best class in Underkeep?

Paladin is the best blind-run class because it covers tanking, healing, and undead control without a partner. Voidcaller is the best support and the better pick if your party already has a frontliner.

Is Thief bad in Underkeep?

Thief is not bad, but it is conditional. It needs a bleed or poison setup and loses much of its value against undead enemies, which are common in the early dungeon.

Can you change class later?

No class change system has been announced. Build the hero you want in the party creator, because the class choice is effectively permanent for that save.
